Must reset modem for internet access?

-So here's the deal: My router;s power supply went bad the other day, so i have to get a new one, but until then, i just plugged my ethernet cord directly into the modem. I have an xbox 360 and a pc, and any time i want to switch the cord from one to the other, i have to reset my modem or i have no internet, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. im just wandering if anybody else has had this problem before, and if so, how did you fix it???unplug the power cord then plug it back in

Pictures are missing!!!?

-I was moving my pictures from my camera to my desktop, it was around 120 pictures, but not all of them showed up on the desktop, and i cut and pasted all the pictures from my camera to there, but like about 15 of them are missing, and I can't get them back because I cut them from my camera. What did the desktop do to my pictures.I'm thinking they were too many pictures for the desktop, but if it was, what happened to the other pictures? because they aren't in the camera folderall on the desktop? probably ran out of room,right click the desktop and refresh

-I personally think it would. Facebook is totally ruining the world. It's ruining relationships, friendships, and families. Same for the other sites. This is only my opinion xD.

Laptop wont connect with my ethernet?

-it detects my ethernet cable buy is says unidentified network and has a yellow triangle with a "!" in it. Whats wrong? i have windows 7.Your network connection will not be able to find a DHCP server.

That means that your network adapter wont have a valid IP to communicate to others on the network.

There is nothing else that can be done to help you without knowing how your network has been setup.

Are you trying to connect two computers with one cable for example.
get the properties of the LAN connection

click on TCP/IP

and then click properties.

make sure it has an auto DHCP

repair the connection

Please help! How can I connect my Ipod to the wi-fi again????!Try turning off your router for a bit. That resets it and usually fixes things.

As for a router, if you think you're going to practice for your CCNA with a friggin' off-the-shelf home router, think again. Hunt down an old Cisco 2600 series router and get the proper cable and a terminal emulator.
If you go to cisco.com, they have some free learning tools. You have to sign up, but it's free. Also instead of purchasing a cisco router, you can download a cisco emulator. An emulator will let you practice configuring the router. It is the same software that is on a hardware router except you can't plug a physical device into it.

To block user to install software, you can give the userpermission as normal user. To do this Just follow the following steps.

Goto MyComputer Icon in desktop

right click then select manage

Then click on the Local users and Group

Click the users.

then right click on the corresponding username

Go to Properties Tab

Remove the administration privileges then add "users"

This will avoid the users to install software.Set the user as Power User instead of Administrator

when u need to temporarily exit.. right click the green U icon in the system tray and click exit to completley exit the program...Well, right click the uTorrent icon at the taskbar and click exit. It should close down. Afterwards, when u want to start it, simply click on the shortcut in the desktop.(I suppose there is a shortcut in the desktop)

Collinc, they aren't legally obligated to maintain 2 years of records, but the US government has tried to mandate that before. For now, they simply encourage it, but 2 years for a major ISP is one helluva load to carry.if you want privacy when downloading their are some programs i forgot the name of it sorry it hides your ip when downloading be careful most of them are scam

Is it bad to use unsecured wifi?

-the apartment complex i'm in has unsecured default wifi. it's free and fast but is it bad for my computer?Not bad for the computer, but bad for you. Anyone else connected to that wireless can sniff all your network traffic, and steal your user ids and other personal information. Worst yet, if it's a hacker that is running that wireless (they do that...), they will be logging everything from all the users, and doing things like stealing identity of those users... Another danger is that if any other computer using the wireless is infected with a virus that spreads via the network (via Windows exploits), your machine may be at risk unless you have a good firewall and AV installed on your system.

Bottom line, using an unsecured wireless IS dangerous to your privacy - consider it open to anyone, and that all can see what you do. So, if all you do is surf the internet or watch youtube videos, you may be somewhat safe. Never "log into" anything when using an open wireless.
not necessarily, you do have to be careful though.

If you are visiting secure sites, then the wifi is irrelevant because the assumption of secure transaction over the internet is that if a malicious user sees the data you send they will not be able to comprehend the meaning of the data...i.e. they won't be able to read your password (because the actual data will not look anything like plain text).

So what you need to be careful of is sending information unsecurely, which most things will do. For instance, the stuff I'm typing right now is probably not encrypted. But anytime you give your password, that should be secure.
Best thing to do if is open is always do HTTPS like https://www.facebook.com, https://www.twitter.com and make sure you have a VERY strong firewall!

And if is open by default and not like a company name such as btopenzone, the cloud, starbucks then find out whos wireless is it and tell them they need to padlock there wireless connection as anyone with a laptop can sniffer the connection

you can then create a custom power plan or edit existing ones and I had the problem at first too but trust me windows 7 is VERY user friendly and you will get used to it fast!

If your access is denied like the title implies you need to use the computers main account (the admin account to change it, beyond that there is NO reason for it to deny you those rights.)

EDIT: Yes, if you have only one account it is the Admin account... if you are receiving a popup message when you attempt to open power settings, please post what it says on here and I will help you troubleshoot further.

BUT it should be as easy as right clicking the battery icon and selecting power options.

My new Linksys Wireless N Router doesn't work =(?

-So I bought the router along with my computer and everything else. After installing my computer I tried installing the router but in the setup it always says that I failed the last step (plugging the router into a power outlet). I wait for the god damn thing to pick it up but it gives me an error message =(. I know it's plugged in since all the lights show up and stuff.

Then it hit me that my computer wasn't wireless so I bought a Netgear Wireless N USB Adapter and now my computer is wireless. So I installed the Linksys Router again but I still can't pass the last step!!!

My computer wont connect to my wireless internet connection?

-I have a netgear router, and yesterday the modem internet kept going on and off, so i thought maybe someone was using my internet acess and I changed the passwords(I did it the with notwork and connections page not the routerlogin.net it wouldnt work for me). but after that it stopped working and will not connect to the internet.

I cant find the net gear cd that came with the router ;( Right now its directly connected to the modem!!

help!Try out by power off the router modem than on it again. If problem still arise than log in through IP address of modem ( with your username and password). Go to default setting.

If the problem still arise than reset your modem pressing a bottom at the backside for more than 5 second. After resetting than configure manually all setting as before.

NO:

Peerblock is simply just a giant library of known IP address. The key word here is KNOWN. If the MPAA/RIAA ect wanted to track you they would just use an IP address that is not in this giant library/database (peerblocker). And yes they know which of their IP address are blocked and which are not (they have access to all peerblockers as well)

My Opinion:

Peerblocker is just a waste of RAM. It can cause lots of firewall problems and can lead to further security issues. If you are trying to be safe about downloading the best thing to do is to find a download site that is secure. What I mean by this is members ONLY and to become a member an invite is required. This helps keep torrents/servers secure from others tracking uploads/downloads. (A majority of people that are caught illegally uploading are done so because the MPAA/RIAA just download the file themselves and then tracks and logs the IP addresses. They have software to do all this for them. You can even do this yourself using the trackers and peers section of each file you have in uTorrent)

This can easily be disconnected. Turn the screw like things in an anti-clockwise direction, till it is completely loose. Generally no screw driver is needed for this operation. Use your index finger and thumb. Once both the screws are completely loose gently pull out the connector. Repaeat the same procedure on the other end.

This cable is not connected to your hard drive. It is connected to the video signal output of your computer and carries the video signals to the monitor.

I assume by Gateway Harddrive you mean the PC itself.

The trick is to twist the 2 little screws like unsrewing something, once you unscrew them the cable should come lose. Both screws on each side must be loosened to remove both ends.

thank youIt totally depends what the other computers / devices are doing so say if computer 1 was download a .exe file that would slow down the reset of the computers on the network, Again it all depends on how fast is downloading so that why a feature of QoS (Quality of service) is better in place to balance the bandwidth but you only get that some routers and switches.

CAN'T connect to Motel Wi-Fi!!!?

-Ok. So if it matters, im in the city of Costa Mesa, California. With my laptop, today i've been easily able to connect to Wi-Fi connections in such places as Starbucks and McDonalds. The problem is that the Motel im staying at DOES offer Wi-Fi (the connection shows up on the list of Wireless Connections nearby), but every time I try to connect, I get a little pop up window at the bottom that reads "Windows was unable to find a certificate to log you on to the network" and the Status of the connection just stays at "Validating Identity"

What can I do here? Is there something I can do on the laptop? This place isn't necessarily a well known place so I have a feeling complaining to the foreign people at the front desk isn't going to get me anywhere.

-So I have Linux Ubuntu 11.04 installed on my computer. I have pretty much customized in every way to my liking except one thing. I really wanted to have widgets like in windows vista/7 or Yahoo Widgets. But I know that Yahoo Widgets is not native to Linux. I have tried one program from the software center but I didn't like the set up. I have also tried Plasma Desktop KDE and ran Kubuntu but I like the interface of Ubuntu more. Is there anyway to get some kind of widgets for my OS. ThanksScreenlets or GDesklets will work. Look for them in Ubuntu's Software Center.
You could check out Opera Widgets. I haven't tried any of them myself so I can't speak to their merits or flaws.

It's your internet package that is important. If you have some crappy 1 mbps download package, a router isn't going to make it faster. Secondly, if you are looking for the best in online gaming, a wireless router of ANY type is a poor choice. Data ALWAYS travels better through a conductor than it does air.

Ubuntu vs windows whats all the hype?

-whats the good and bad with ubuntu linux vs windowsWindows is pretty much the industry standard so most applications will work in it, however with Linux you get more freedom on the configuration of your desktop and software, better security (free of malware), and a faster/more stable system. There are tons of more differences between the two operating systems as you can see from the responses here, but those are the main differences IMHO.

I would recommend a first time user of Ubuntu dual boot with Windows just like you're doing and expect a steep learning curve as you adapt to doing things differently than you would in Windows. Avoid reinstalling the operating system when you run in to troubles. Instead boot in to Windows and see if your problem can be fixed (95% of the time it can).

PlayOnLinux does an excellent job at configuring WINE to work with various Windows applications, including games. It is one of my favorite applications to use when I want to get something installed on WINE. WineTricks is another good program to keep under your belt if you're interested in running applications under WINE.

I have been running Linux for many years. No Windows box in my house for about 10 years now. In the time I have been running linux I have had no problems with virus/trojans etc. Also never needed to reboot to cure a frozen computer, and never needed to reformat/reinstall due to "performance issues". Also Linux is very innovative. Many features of windows are taken from ideas that have been implemented in Linux for a while already.

I also like to experiment with web based software, and LInux gives me the chance to run everything I want for this free of charge. It is the same software that runs on the majority of servers on the web already, and I can be sure that code I write for a LInux based site will run exactly the same on Windows.

All of this is great, but the thing I like most is the open philosophy of GNU/Linux. All pretty political, and takes a while to really understand the implications, but a very healthy approach in my opinion.

On the downside, LInux is badly supported for commercial gaming, but I have XBox and Wii for this, so it's no problem :D
Overall a Linux based platform can perform most of the tasks equally as well as a proprietary platform using the likes of Ubuntu and its derivative distros. However Linux does have its limitations with some applications and in particular gaming. For example I retain a dedicated Windows partition to run specific applications such as Office 2010 etc.

I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 9 LTS which is built upon Ubuntu 10.04 LTS its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

I am using Linux for last 16 years and not on a single occassion was it infected by virus or malware. I am presently using Ubuntu 10.10 and it is 20% faster on the internet compared to windows.

But if your main interest is games then go for Windows only. Linux is poor where games are concerned. Also for some of the peripherals like scanners and USB TV tuners no drivers are available in Linux.

In conclusion I will say Linux is Stable, flexible and versatile. And "Linux is free as in freedom".
Ubuntu is not for everybody,it can be complex and you have to live with alternatives or limitations.On the other side there is nothing that won't work with windows

Any way to slow down my parents internet?

-Hey i want to start playing xbox live but we dont have cable internet we have mobile internet or broadband which is we can take our computers anywhere and have internet. My parents dont want to switch because they have no problems with it. But is there a way i can give them a ''problem'' like slow down their internet? so they will switch. How would it be done? -Everything there is to know about them. No links.Ok, when you play an online game it has to run threw something, Like having multiple people playing off one xbox. People run there controllers(computers) to the server(xbox) and they play it threw there. for example online COD. It hosts the website or game server. Its a rally point to converge it all together when playing. A server can also host a website, same thing, they get the info from this server instead of getting it from your computer. Lynx is a type of gaming server.
A game server is the "thing" (poorly put) that transfers all the game info to gland from who ever is playing that game. So say you are playing blacks and ur dead. The server transmits what going on on you teammates screen to you (spectating)

How do I make a coax bridge over a network?

-This is an odd situation and I am not sure there is a solution out there but I thought I would try. I have a satellite dish that I need to connect to a device in another house. This isn't related to satellite tv but rather data. Is there hardware available that can transmit a coax connection over a network to create a bridge? I have seen similar devices for a serial connection in which a device encodes the signal and transmits it over a network to a receiving device that decodes the signal. About the best you can do is to be able to tell what ISP has given them the address. That will give you a general location for the person. For example, it they are given the IP by an ISP in Phoenix, they are most likely somewhere in Arizona. But that is about as close as you can get.

Is there a psychological explanation to why some people feel sadness after beating a game?

-I was just wondering why so I and apparently other people feel sorta depressed for a short time after beating a game .

Logically, there is no reason you can't have an undergrad in arts and grad degree in hardware and networking as long as you meet the requirements. If you are interested in web design or desktop publishing, all the better, for having an arts degree.

The wifi is the wireless connection from your PC to your router/modem. That connection can be fine, but the modem needs a connection to the internet. Try rebooting it. If that fails, check the settings.

How does an ISP like Rogers define "download"?

-I would like to get to the bottom of this, my plan says that I'm allowed to download 60GB, however, it said I went over by 13GB. I did not download much during the month of June, but the account says that I've been downloading 7 GB a day. What I downloaded during that billing period were only 15GB of games like TF2 and LoL. So I would like to ask: what does the ISPs like Rogers define as downloading?

Limited Access to a Wifi Connection?

-I'm at a friends house and I tried to connect to his wifi and it seems that it searched it fine, but it has full bars but has a triangle with an exclamation point in it. It says "Unidentified Network" and under that "No Network Access"

When I open it it says his internet routers name and then Limited Access with full bars next to it.

I've connected to all kinds of different wifi connections fine, why am I having problems with this one and how can I fix it?

I have the correct security key and we already tried to unplug the router and plug it in again, It didn't do anything or change it.

How can I reconnect to my server?

-The server for my work was showing up in My Computer (Windows 7) however it wasn't connecting, the little hard drive image had the red cross through it instead of being green. I right clicked on it to see if I could trouble shoot it, however I accidently clicked 'disconnect' and now the drive is gone from My Computer.

-I've got a project but one of the people I'm working with currently resides across the Atlantic ocean, what is the best free program i can use to upload and download files i post. I don't want to email things because this is a bi-daily file sharing situation.

2 computers on wireless network and one doesn't connect now. Help, please!?

-Ok, I have a Netgear router in the basement that splits to different things throughout the house (x-box, Dish DVR, etc) and also to a brainless wireless router upstairs. We have two laptops and both connected just fine to the network until a couple of days ago. The older laptop works fine but the newer one connects to the wireless router but doesn't connect to the internet. I tried connecting hard wire from the laptop to the Netgear router in the basement and still the same thing. No problems connecting to the internet with anything else in the house. The newer laptop is running Vista and there haven't been any new downloads lately or new programs. I also did a system restore to about 3 weeks ago before the problem started and still the same thing. I could understand if the wireless card went bad then it would not connect to the wireless router at all. Just baffles me to no end. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. My mother got a brand new desktop with a built-in Wireless Adapter and a month or so it went out.

I'm not sure how she fixed the problem, but that could be the reason it's not working.
Check your network adapters in your Device Manager, see if the drivers are still there. You may need to reinstall them. you may have lost your driver when you did a system restore. Its just a guess Another guess is , do you have your wireless button on your laptop turned off? They are easy to bump and turn off if you arent carefull ,, just picking it up to go to a different room or something simple like that could do it if you put your thumb in the wrong place,,,another thing to check is open your web browser and make sure the "Work Offline" box isnt checked.

you can get an ethernet card and switch out the modem port go to a pc repair parts shop you should be able to pick one up really cheap maybe $5 if you are not good with computers bring it in and they will do it for you they will probably charge you $30-40 though if they have to do the work. however it's really not to hard you take the case cover off and the ethernet card plugs into the motherboard like a cartridge. here's an instructional video on how to install the card

Those are the same thing. Telephone ports are not "lan" ports. Telephone ports are RJ-12, lan/ethernet ports are RJ-45. There is no converter from telephone/modem jack to ethernet port. The old computer needs an ethernet card which will have a lan/ethernet/rj-45 jack.

"Lan" means local area network, and those use Ethernet as their protocol.
Helm Marie! I'm afraid you've mistaken it for a LAN port.. Telephone cable port you see is not a LAN port though it looks like one.. It uses a different kind of RJ cable, and hence won't work good for your computer.. By d way, LAN and Ethernet ports mean the same..

-i just got my modem from AT&T..i set up the modem exactly how its suppose to. and when i open a web browser, it should automatically go to the at&t page for me to enter some information..however the page keeps goin to a page saying "unable to connect to server" how can i fix this?wow , check your network adapter cards, be sure the drivers are installed. did you setup your encryption? In the lower right hand of your computer can you click there in the navigation pane and find your list of available networks? If you can , can you connect to yours?

Why is my wireless network disappearing?

-I have a very strange issue and I believe is on the computers end and not an issue with the router. What happens is my wireless network will disappear from the list of available networks, and when this occurs I am unable to access the network on three other devices (Ipod touch x2, and laptop). I am still able to see other networks in my area when this occurs. My first thought was the router, but I discovered something else that is interesting. When I log off or reset the desktop the network comes up immediately on the other devices. I also found that removing the network on the desktop under manage wireless networks fixes the issue. I watch my ipod touch and see the network come up within a second after pressing log off on the desktop. I am a fairly experienced with computer repair and actually have worked in the business, but this one has me stumped. So far I removed the wireless driver and installed the most up to date driver from the manufacturers website. I am thinking that the next step would be replacing the wireless card, or formatting the computer. I am running win 7 32 bit on this machine.

your Computer cables rj45 will be connected to the wirless router turn sharing on, on all your computers. It will reconize your folders your trying to share. you don't have to secure your sharing just secure your router when you get it.

Option 2. you MIGHT can buy a linksys gaming adapter and plug in the "HUB IN TO IT AND IT WILL ALLOW ALL OF THEM TO BE WIFIED UP." I never tried that method but it might work also.

-Lately I've been experiencing problems with my wireless internet connection. I've found it almost unbearable to do anything such as stream netflix, watch videos, play games, even browse the internet. I pinged myself in command prompt and I saw huge spikes of lag going up to 1500 ms every few times. These random lag spikes have never happened in the past and have been going on for about a month. Does that mean my router is bad, or what? Thanks guys. Oh; my isp is Road Runner and my speedtest results are 3mbits down and .40 mbits upSounds more like a latency issue. Try doing a tracert to a website on the internet. It will tell you where the lag is happening on your network. Look for any asteriks or time out these indicate slow connections at particular routers. Also reboot your entire network, if you havent tried that alerady. Unscrew the coaxle cable from the roadrunner modem and leave it out for a minute before you screw it back in. Since you have wireless also make sure that your connection is secure and that no one is piggybacking on your bandwidth.

And don't work on the degree all together.

Get a smaller 12 unit - 15 unit certificate ( if your college offers them) it will only take you a semester to get the certificate, and get a job.My college calls them "network administration essentials", its 12 units ( 4 classes), these units in the certificate are also required in the degrees. The units for the certification will be the same classes you will need for the MIcrosoft and Cisco networking degrees. Then do all other computer classes. Then general education classes.

This way you can get your ahead, have a job, and experience before you are out of college!I would consider the cisco degree more general although you will probably end up with a bunch of proprietary cisco propaganda. Being more general, I would consider it preferable unless you know you want to work for a microsoft shop.

The courses may have a lot of overlap since the microsoft course has to run on someone's brand of network and the cisco course would not be very interesting if you didn't have any hosts.

I read an article today that said net admins were going to be more in demand with cloud computing and net engineers less. My opinion is the exact opposite. Go with what you'd enjoy more!

edit: Not that I think cloud computing is going to be the only game in town. Just the most recent job outlook article I've seen :)

edit2: Network admin, despite the title, focuses more on administering users of the network than the network itself. (In my experience) So the MS course path would be better or a linux path. the network portion of a net admin is more about DHCP, DNS, and such than routing tables and switch configs.
i dont know much about the microsoft cert but i will say i was enrolled in the cisco networking academy and i do know that the CCENT and CCNA certifications look great on a resume
