-what does it mean when the computer ast to set a defaultThe other responders' answer refers to how you restore some computer setting to its original setting, but the computer (meaning Windows or Mac OS, or some program) wouldn't normally know that you are lost and ask that you reset something to its default. Besides, the computer would know what the default is and could restore the original condition itself provided it can decide that you're lost in the first place.
I believe the default you're referring to is some value that you must enter, or selection that your must make to start some operation that you do frequently. A default, once provided, will be filled in for you on the screen so you can simply press ENTER to proceed. But, you do have the option to pause and change the entry (to which you've provided a default) to something else.
A default is like how the factory first put it on. Like if you screw around with settings and crap and it asks you if you want it back on the default, it will put it back like how it was when you first got it.
The setting that's there without having been changed by someone else.
In a sentence, "the default background colour was blue, I changed it to green".
